On 16-17 of November 2000 in Krakow the outdoor session of the E-MRS Executive Committee entitled 'European Materials Research Society in Central Europe' was organized to integrate the scientists from all of Europe. The current session of E-MRS authorities organized at the Krakow University of Technology underlines a willingness for co-operation of both Western and Eastern parts of Europe. In that session participants included the E-MRS President Prof. Giovanni Marietta, the E-MRS General Secretary Dr. Paul Siffert, the Vice President of International Union of Material Research Societies (IUMRS), Dr Peter Glasow and Krakow University of Technology H.M. Rectors: Prof. Kazimierz J. Flaga, Prof. Marcin Chrzanowski and Prof. Ryszard Henryk Kozlowski. The discussions were divided into three sessions.
In the second and last day, during the third session the meeting of E-MRS Executive Committee with participants from Central Europe countries took place. The main subject of the discussions was description of a practical E-MRS activities in this part of Europe. It is connected with a strong will scientists from this region to join with organizations connected with European science institutes and formal participation in several European Union projects.
The following conclusions were agreed.
1. Establishing The E-MRS Committee for Central Europe located at The Krakow Uniwersity of Technology. The committee consists of 12 scientist from Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Belarus and Bulgaria and Prof. Ryszard Ciach was elected as the chairman.
2. One of the Committee's tasks will be the organization of E-MRS Fall Meetings in the idividual Central Europe countries. Organization of these events will be based on the model of the E-MRS Spring Meetings in Strasbourg. Moreover, the Committee will initiate international co-operation and integration in the field of material engineering. Special proceedings will be taken to facilitate the scientists from Central Europe in participating in European Union projects.
